Refrain vs. Readwise
A Kindle highlights app without the subscription. Updated September 9, 2026.
If you're looking for a Readwise alternative because of the monthly bill, and your highlights are Kindle highlights, Refrain was built for exactly you. If you're looking for one because you want Readwise's breadth without the price, it wasn't, and this page will save you a download.
What's the same
- A daily return to your highlights. A few passages come back each day, chosen from books you haven't seen in a while, with the ones you dog-eared leading. This is the part of Readwise most people actually use, and it is the whole point of Refrain.
- Kindle import that just works. Sign in to Amazon inside the app and your highlights arrive with their books, notes, and real covers. My Clippings.txt import covers older Kindles and sideloaded books. The two merge without duplicates.
- Search, and sync across devices. Exact-text search is free. Your library syncs between iPhone, iPad, and Mac through your own iCloud.
What's different

- Readwise is a subscription. Refrain is free, and the discovery layer is $4.99 once. There is nothing to cancel, because there is nothing recurring.
- Where your library lives
- Readwise keeps your highlights in a cloud account. Refrain has no account and no server: your library lives on your devices and syncs through your own iCloud. How that works, plainly.
- The intelligence
- Everything that reads your passages runs on your device, including search by meaning, threads across books, and the daily echo from the wider canon. Nothing about your reading is sent anywhere for processing.
- Apple-native
- Real apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch, a Home Screen widget, keyboard shortcuts on iPad and Mac. One purchase covers all of them.
- Focus
- Refrain does one thing: your Kindle highlights, reread and connected. It is deliberately small.
What Refrain doesn't do
This is the honest half. If any of these is why you use Readwise, keep Readwise.
- Only Kindle. No articles, podcasts, PDFs, web highlights, Apple Books, or Kobo. Refrain reads two sources: your Amazon Kindle notebook and My Clippings.txt.
- No export integrations. Nothing pushes to Notion, Obsidian, Roam, or Evernote, and 1.0 has no bulk export to a file. You can copy or share any passage, with citation, one at a time. More on the export page.
- No tags, no email digests, no reader app. Refrain isn't trying to be Readwise Reader.
- Apple only. No Android, no web app.

Refrain is complete for free, and every count in the free app is real: it will tell you how many threads run through your books before you pay a cent. If you'd like to look around before signing in to Amazon, there's a sample library that takes a minute to import.
